Witches Hat Cookies

By Linette Gerlach

Witches hat cookies are great fun for your preschooler to help make, and eat. Serve them with a scoop of ice cream on the side for a really delicious treat. Baking is a great way to introduce your preschooler to measuring and fractions. Explain some of the measurements in simple terms, it may not sink in now but it will give your preschooler a reference for future learning.

What you will need

(c) Linette Gerlach Melting Chocolate or Chocolate bark
24 Sugar Cones (if you can find chocolate cones you won’t need to dip them)
chocolate or chocolate fudge cake mix
1 cup chocolate chips
2 large eggs
1/2 cup melted butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
Optional: Icing, black or other color, food coloring, and cake decorating tip to add a ribbon around the brim of the hat.

How To Make It

Step 1:
Heat the melting chocolate according to the directions on the bag.

Step 2:
Pour a portion of the melted chocolate onto a dinner plate, or shallow pie plate.

Step 3:
Roll the sugar cones in the chocolate to coat the outside.

Step 4:
Set the cones on end on wax paper or aluminum foil to dry.

Step 5:
Preheat your oven to 350`F.

Step 6:
Let your preschooler help you combine the cake mix, eggs, butter, vanilla, and brown sugar in a bowl. Mix by hand with a spatula until well blended. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Step 7:
Drop the cookies by tablespoons on a cookie sheet and bake for about 12-14 minutes.

Step 8:
When you remove the cookies from the oven let your preschooler help insert the sugar cones into the cookie with the cone opening side down. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Additional Decorating Ideas

When the cookies have cooled you can use a pipe tip and decorative icing to pipe a ribbon around the base of the hat.

Witches Hat Cookies are great for a Halloween gift basket.

Add them with Ghost Sticks to make a fun Halloween party tray for your preschooler's classroom.

Serve with a scoop of ice cream underneath, to make the witches head.

You can also call them Wizard Hat Cookies for a wizard or magic themed preschool birthday party. Let your preschooler add star sprinkles to the chocolate while it's still melted for an added wizard touch.
