Shadow Preschoolers
By Linette GerlachThis is a great project to start as soon as your preschooler gets up in the morning. Help your preschooler understand how the Earth moves, causing their shadow to change. You can also work on the parts of the body with this quick preschool project.
Step 1:
First thing in the morning head outside with your preschooler and the sidewalk chalk.
Step 2:
Have your preschooler stand with the sun to their back, so their shadow stretches out in front of them.
Step 3:
Trace around your child's shadow, then it's your turn. Stand perfectly still and let your preschooler trace your shadow.
Step 4:
When you're done tracing an outline it's time to decorate. Give your shadow preschooler hair, eyes, clothes, and any other details you can think of. Let your preschooler decorate your shadow, encourage them to fill in as many details as possible.
Step 5:
At lunchtime (as close to noon as possible), go outside and stand in the same spot you stood in earlier. Note the changes in the length of the shadow with your preschooler.
What Your Preschooler Can Learn
Explain to your preschooler how the earth rotates on its axis and the changing of day into night as the earth rotates around. This project is also a great way to help your preschooler learn to draw detail, and understand body parts. As you're adding detail to your pictures, point out the different body parts (arms, legs, hair), and details in the picture.
